Honduras.-Coral reefs are considered among the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on the planet, and are considered the second most important in the world
A reef is the rocky structure on the underwater platform, which has been formed by the skeletons of corals and other marine organisms. Other words used for the reef are down and down. Not all coral species form reefs.
Why? Mesoamerican Reef
The Mesoamerican System is the largest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere and the second largest reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and is located in the Caribbean Sea along the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras extending 700 km from the Yucatan peninsula to the Bay Islands on the north coast of the country.
The reefs are called "Tropical Forests of the Sea". Some species live in deep areas where there are no reefs, other species do not grow fast enough or massive enough to form reefs.
The calcareous exoskeleton is what actually forms the framework of the reef. As the corals die, the limestone remains of the skeletons on which new corals grow. In addition, as the polyps reproduce asexually, the coral increases in size and as a result the reef grows. As in coral, the living coral portion of a reef is found on the surface. The base and inner part of the reef are formed by skeletons of dead coral that existed hundreds and thousands of years ago.
The ecological functions of reefs and seagrass, the coral reef is one of the world's ecosystems with the highest biodiversity and constitutes a natural protection against strong waves.
Economic benefits of reefs and seagrass:
Because of its natural beauty attract tourists which generates income to the population.
Reefs and seagrasses provide the population with marine resources of high commercial value.
The island has so far identified 167 species of reef fish.
Among the types of marine grass that Roatan has we can highlight among the most important:
1.-The turtle grass
2.-The manatee grass.
